When is Malaysian Independence Day? Malaysia's Independence Day is celebrated on August 31st. Also known as Merdeka Day (Freedom Day), this is Malaysia's National Day. History of Malaysian Independence Day The day commemorates the independence of the Federation of Malaya from British colonial rule in 1957. On August 31st 1957, over 20,000 people gathered at the Merdeka Stadium in Kuala Lumpur as government officials shouted “Merdeka!” seven times in a declaration of freedom. Malaysia was formed in 1963 when the former British colony of Singapore and the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, joined the Federation of Malaya. This event is marked by Malaysia Day. Singapore left the federation in August 1965. How is Malaysian Independence Day celebrated? Malaysia's independence day is celebrated with much pomp and pageantry, signifying the unity of Malaysians of all races and creeds. Towns and cities throughout the country are decorated with flags and shimmering lights. The celebration centres on Merdeka Square in the morning, the starting point of a spectacular parade. His Majesty, the King, and government leaders sit among the thousands of spectators. At the end of the parade, the crowds shout “Merdeka!” to honour the original declaration of independence. In a spirit of patriotism, office buildings, homes, and even vehicles proudly display the Malaysian flag. Other activities held during this period include stage shows, competitions, and exhibitions, taking place from Kula Lumpur and across the Malaysian peninsula and throughout its 878 islands. Selamat Hari Merdeka, Malaysia! Happy Independence Day, Malaysia!

Pauline Black received an Honorary Doctorate from the University Of Warwick this morning. She is now an Honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt) She would like to thank Helen Wheatley for her lovely presentation address & Chancellor, Baroness Catherine Ashton. Also, a shout out to Coventry music historian Pete Chambers for telling Helen that “Pauline is a woman of many hats”;-) -
